This month, the historic 1907 Depot Museum in Tomball is taking part in a regional celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. This educational exhibit presents the historic mission in video, photos, a miniature diorama and more. Accompanying the display is a second exhibit honoring the NASA Railroad and its many years supporting America's space program at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Check it out on Saturday, July 20th, beginning at 11:00 a.m.!
Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that landed the first two people on the Moon. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, both American, landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface six hours later on July 21; Aldrin joined him 19 minutes afterwards.
The NASA Railroad is a Class III industrial short-line railroad that consists of 38 miles of track connecting the mainline of the Florida East Coast Railway and trackage at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. NASA used the railroad to transport equipment which could not be transported over the road to and from other NASA locations.
Other permanent displays at the Tomball Depot Museum include two highly detailed model railroad layouts, railroad artifacts and memorabilia, a 50-year-old caboose and maintenance shed filled with tools and equipment, original railroad art by illustrator Ken Walden, hobo exhibit and lots more.
